These free number of the day mats give kindergarten students a structured way to explore numbers through multiple representations every day. Teachers can use them with any number from 1 to 20.
The 4 mats cover two number ranges: 1-10 and 1-20. Two mats focus on the 1-10 range, and two focus on the 1-20 range. Each range also includes two different designs. This makes it easy to vary the routine or target specific skills.
The 1-10 mats cover the following skills: number word, ten frame, domino, even/odd, tally marks, number line, fact family house, and number bond. The 1-20 mats additionally include place value (tens and ones).
To use the mats, slip each one into a page protector and use with a dry erase marker. Students then write the number of the day and work through each section. Afterwards, they wipe the mat clean.
Number of the Day works well as a whole-class warm-up at the start of a maths lesson. It also suits small group instruction or independent centre time. The consistent format means students build confidence and fluency with each session.
